Airnews Newsgroup Request Form

Is there a News Group that you have seen elsewhere that you want to read that is not on Airnews? Just request the group that you want added to the Airnews Library by filling out the following form.

Notice: All groups are subject to our Acceptable Use Policy and you must be an Airnews customer (or a customer of an ISP that provides Airnews access) to make a request.
Thank you for choosing Airnews!

Wait! Quite a number of people fill out this form and request a group that we already carry! Sometimes this is because the actual group name is spelled a bit differently than what you were expecting, or it could also be a brand new group that was created on USENET in the past few days, and we tend to add groups in bunches, so it may be a few business days before we add a new group everywhere it needs to go.

By downloading a current list of news groups to your news reader, you may find that the group you want is already available or has a name close but not quite identical to what you are looking for, such as alt.binaries.pictures.captain_kirk instead of alt.binaries.captain_kirk. (Missing or adding an incorrect name segment is a common mistake.) You can also check a list of groups at Airnews by clicking here before proceeding.

Airnews procedures for alt.* Hierarchy News Group additions

When a USENET control message comes in specifying that a new alt.* group is to be created, usually within a few days we add the group without anyone having to request it if it doesn't violate the AUP and all of the following conditions are true:
  1. A valid group creation message exists in our archives or at ISC.ORG (an independent repository),
  2. The charter for the group allows anyone, anywhere to post to that group (directly or via a standard moderator),
  3. Has a valid (or salvagable) "newsgroups" file entry,
  4. Has not been superceded/replaced with a different group (such as the first creation attempt containing a typo). An example of such a case might be a creation order for alt.binaries-hqmsters versus the also-created alt.binaries.hamsters that appeared five minutes later. (Groups created as part of a flood/attack are not automatically added.)
(The purpose of these requirements on unrequested adds of alt.* groups is to prevent the blind addition of groups that were created by mistake or as part of USENET abuse, groups that usually end up containing only spam. In coordinated hierarchies, the coordinator would not normally make these types of mistakes.)

If an alt.* news group isn't added automatically when it first appears and later on a customer requests that news group (using the above form), the group will be added even if it doesn't have a charter or valid "newsgroups" file entry. (Remaining conditions and AUP still apply.)

Airnews procedures for Coordinated Hierarchies News Group additions

For groups in coordinated hierarchies (comp, rec, soc, talk, misc, bionet, sci, uk, fido, fr, de, and almost every hierarchy except alt), we get lists from the coordinators from time to time (these are known as "checkgroups" messages) that tell us what groups should or should not exist. The given coordinator is the only person allowed to create and remove groups within the given hierarchy. We routinely synchronize to the lists for coordinated hierarchies in the first few days of each month, provided the coordinator remembers to send out a new "checkgroups" message. Sometimes, we must contact the coordinator directly, and this can take additional time.

If you request a group in a coordinated hierarchy, if the latest available information from the coordinator says the group should exist, it will be added, subject to the AUP.

Please allow five (5) business days for each requested group to be reviewed and added.
